Walking Trips for Small Groups
“Wonderful memories – I am keeping my walking shoes ready for our next adventure.”
Barbara B., Edgecomb ME
Our seven-day trips immerse you in Italy’s history, beyond the guidebooks and crowds. Walking is the most satisfying way to experience the land and its people. A daypack is all you carry.
A six-guest maximum lets us tailor the trip to your interests and ambition level, from gentle to challenging. You can join a group or create one.
Lodging is in charming B&Bs and village inns, two to four nights in each town. Rooms are often small but always clean and comfortable.
Meals are a highlight: family restaurants serving delicious local specialties and wines.
We meet in Rome, one of the world’s most fascinating cities. Enjoy a few days here while adjusting to the time change. We’ll suggest lodging convenient for our rendezvous.
A Typical Day
- Morning walk of 3-6 miles (group’s choice). The pace is relaxed – we take our time and enjoy the scenery. Trails can be hilly: most guests perspire lightly and pause to catch their breath. You must be in good health and accustomed to walks of this type.
- Lunch at 12:30 or 1:00.
- Free time to rest or explore or your own.
- Short walk about 5 pm, often with a visit to a point of interest, and an aperitivo (snack/drink)
- Dinner at 7:30 or 8:00.
Local transportation is provided by passenger van.
What to Bring
“You'll meet two kinds of travelers: those who pack light and those who wish they had.” (Rick Steves)
- Lightweight clothing is hand-washable, and layers let you adapt to the weather. It can be hot, cold or rainy in any month, so flexibility is important.
- A waterproof jacket (not “water-repellent”) of a breathable material such as Gore-Tex® is essential. A travel umbrella is also useful in case of thunderstorms.
- Comfortable shoes with good traction. Trails may be slippery, rocky or muddy. Sturdy running shoes or cross-trainers are preferable to heavy boots. Break them in!
- Daypack and refillable water bottle
- Optional: walking poles, insect repellent
Meals
We’ve made it a priority to find wonderful family restaurants where meals are special events you’ll long remember. Guests often find this the most enjoyable part of the trip.
Health
A recent Covid booster is strongly recommended before traveling. Should medical care be needed, it’s generally quite good in Italy. For common ailments, locals rely on advice from pharmacists, most of whom speak English.
Insurance
Travel insurance is prudent. Stuff happens: cancelled flights, illness precluding travel, illness abroad, loss of belongings, etc. Suppose your guide is incapacitated…hasn’t happened but is possible. There are many coverage options online.
