frequently asked questions

Personally tailored trips or join a groupHow strenuous are the walks? A typical trip lasts 5 to 8 days, walking 3 to 5 hours a day (about 5 to 8 miles) in partly hilly terrain. It’s not strenuous for those accustomed to aerobic activity, but perspiring lightly or stopping to catch your breath now and then is to be expected. There’s never a hurry – the point is to see things! If you’d like a less (or more) ambitious excursion I’ll happily arrange it.  Please note: all participants must be in good physical condition.

Will I join a group? If you choose one of the featured excursions, yes. But you can also design your own excursion – a trip just for your party.

Where do we meet?  Normally Rome, one of the world’s most delightful cities. Consider spending a few days here before starting your walk – it’s a great place to recover from jet lag. To book your flight, see a good travel agent or book online. Tip: flights departing Rome before 8 am may require hiring a taxi at $70 or more.

What are the meals like?  Some customs differ from ours. Typical breakfast choices are coffee, cappuccino, juice, pastry, bread, jam; perhaps yogurt, cereal, fruit. If you don’t see what you want we can visit a grocery store. Lunch may be a yummy picnic on the trail or a restaurant stop. Dinner happens late (usually 8 pm) but is worth the wait – these are wonderful family restaurants. Local wines are generally very good. Tip: the ubiquitous bar (no resemblance to an American bar) is a great resource at almost any hour, offering many choices of food and beverage.

Come for the food!

The accommodations?  Clean, comfortable, congenial, modest establishments: family B&Bs, restored monasteries, small hotels, village inns. If your trip includes Rome, I know several pleasant hotels near the historic center. My goal is excellent value – you’d have a hard time doing better on your own. Tip: budget or upscale options are available in many locations – see design your own excursion.

What level of comfort can I expect?  Great food, cozy lodging – but remember, it’s a walking trip. A bit of exertion and adventure are involved. At times we use public transport where traveling light is essential. Hotel rooms, bathrooms and shower stalls are often small, European style. Laundromats are rare: hand washing of clothes is the norm. Tip: a bit of concentrated liquid detergent goes a long way; lightweight “travel” clothing dries fast.

Who carries my luggage?  When we walk from town to town, your luggage will be shuttled by private car or taxi.  You’ll want to carry a small pack for the day’s needs – lunch, water, extra clothing, raingear, camera, etc.  When we travel by train or bus, you’ll be responsible for carrying your luggage.  Traveling light is best.

Bring comfortable shoes

How structured is our time?  Although most days have a full slate of activities, there’s a period of free time each afternoon. In the evening we usually eat together, but you’re always welcome to venture out on your own: ask me for ideas.

How firm is the itinerary?  Reasonably firm. Minor changes are possible due to rain, a closed attraction, a cancelled train, or a sudden inspiration on the part of your guide – so a bit of flexibility on your part is appreciated.

Should I bring raingear?  Absolutely – I suggest a light rain shell and a compact umbrella. If it’s raining too hard to walk, we’ll visit museums, churches, cafes, shops, nearby towns; we’ll enjoy an extra long lunch, and maybe a riposino (cat nap).

Do I need special walking shoes?  You need well broken-in shoes that have proven themselves comfortable over many miles and that are rugged enough to handle sharp rocks, uneven terrain and a bit of mud. I can’t stress too highly the importance of good shoes. Walking with sore feet is no fun.

What’s the best season for walking?  I like spring – temperatures are mild, the air is fresh and there’s lots of greenery. That’s when I’m usually in Italy; other times may be possible by special arrangement
