After leaving Rome the Via Cassia traverses the narrow “Sutri gap” as it heads north. Controlling this strategic passage, Sutri looms large in history and legend... here lurk the shades of Etruscans, Romans, Ostrogoths, Lombards, kings, popes, artists and pilgrims. Many have left their mark.

We’ll visit massive Etruscan rock tombs: in one, Roman soldiers created a Mithraic cult chamber; in another, legend holds that King Charlemagne’s knight Orlando was born. Also carved in the rock is a spectacular Roman amphitheater. Sutri’s outskirts brim with ancient tombs and roads, and the Via Cassia can be traced northward for miles. The scenic landscape is ideal for walking.

Leaving Sutri, we’ll follow the Roman road above gorgeous Lake Bolsena and on into Umbria. Our final destination is Orvieto, perched on a high bluff overlooking the countryside and crowned by one of Italy’s most stunning cathedrals. more details

As always, I’ve personally chosen great family restaurants and comfortable B&Bs with old-world ambiance.

Please book your trip by June 15. Six-guest limit.

A very special week of walking and other sensory delights in the Valle Umbra, renowned for wine, food and natural beauty. We’ll lodge in luxurious private apartments at Le Logge di Silvignano, a historic country home overlooking the valley, with garden patio and pool. Below passed the Roman Via Flaminia, connecting Rome with the northern Adriatic coast. Beside it we’ll visit an ancient spring celebrated in Roman poetry and enjoy an afternoon aperitivo beside the lovely lake. In the surrounding hills, paths wind through terraced olive orchards to medieval castles, colorful towns, Roman aqueducts, and vineyards where wine and delicacies are offered to those who stroll by. We’ll explore Assisi, birthplace of Saint Francis, and the historic towns of Spello, Montefalco, Bevagna, and Spoleto. Our meals will be memorable: I’ve chosen outstanding restaurants with delicious local cuisine and wines.

This will be an unforgettable week. Le Logge di Silvignano is always in demand, so timely booking is suggested (15 June or earlier). Six-guest limit.
